How to goal plan,
So that you actually achieve your goals
BY JENNIFER PARE
So another year has come and gone, how many of your goals did you achieve?
Or did you even set any, because it gets discouraging to make goals you never accomplish, right?
Believe me, I know how it feels. Until a few years ago, I had never achieved a goal I set out for myself that didn't have some other accountability built in (like teachers and parents).
Not one.
Ugh.
But I am insanely happy to say I have figured it out and I now know what it takes to MAKE IT HAPPEN!
And the awesome news is that it really isn't that hard. With the right steps and a little work, achieving your goals is very attainable, no matter how big or small they are. Its all in the plan and the way you implement that plan.
1- So, first things first, write it down. I know you've heard this one before. Get specific about what exactly you want and how much time you are giving yourself to achieve it. For example, instead of 'Get In Shape', which is vague and hard to measure, try 'Run a 6 min mile by June 1st'. Sit down and take 10-15 minutes to brainstorm and dream up any goals you want to set for all the areas of your life (career, relationships, environment, etc).
One note; Don't get too crazy about what you set at once. If you have big goals you may only be able to realistically work on 2-3 at a time.
2- Next, I want you to take a look at all your goals. Is there one that, once completed, it would make achieving the other goals easier? Or do you need to set another goal that would help move the others along faster?
This is a concept I learned from Chalene Johnson, who teaches that there is often one goal that will help the others happen faster, so this goal should be your priority. She calls it your Push Goal. It is often financially orientated because lets be honest, money does make things easier.
Now I am definitely not saying that money buys happiness but we do have to recognize that it will make some things in life easier. For example, if one of your goals is to get in shape, having the money to buy a workout program or hire a personal trainer will make it easier because it helps you to stay accountable and you can rely on someone else's expertise instead of trying to figure it out yourself.
3- Now its time to figure out exactly what you need to do to achieve this goal.
Take each one and brainstorm every thing you can think of that needs to be done. Then break down each of these things into tasks that take no more then 60 minutes. This is important because if we don't break things down into doable steps, we get overwhelmed and find it hard to schedule it in.
Next, take all the tasks you need to do and put them in a logical order. Figure out how many of these tasks you can do in the next 90 days and concentrate on making a detailed plan for these tasks. You may also need to break your tasks down into even smaller steps if you will only have short periods of time to work on your goals.
After 90 days, re-evaluate where you are and plan for the next 90 days. Sometimes you may need to backtrack and sometimes you got even further then planned.
Not all goals will take multiple 90 day blocks so if you can accomplish everything in 1 block then go ahead and map out the entire goal in detail.
4- Now this next step is what most people leave out, and it truly is one of the most important steps to making sure you actually do the plan you mapped out.
You need to assign due dates to the tasks (or groups of tasks) and WRITE THEM INTO YOUR AGENDA RIGHT AWAY. (Don't have agenda? Get one here).
So, for example, if your goal is getting your home organized, then you might assign a due date to each room, as well as a final date for the entire goal.
This step is going to be very personal to you and your lifestyle and what you can fit into your schedule. Figure out which due dates are reasonable for you and mark them into your calendar so that you see them regularly and are reminded of what you need to be working on.
5- Which brings me to the final step.
Well actually, its really the first step.
You absolutely need a proper agenda and day planner.
Seriously, its non negotiable. It is the ONLY thing I will tell you that you need to buy.
And if you can make your own, then awesome go do that first. (but most of us can't, so if you need an awesome one that is affordable check out the Life Book.)
But before you buy any agenda, you need to make sure it has all the elements you need in order to plan your goals. It needs a section for goal planning that is big enough for the entire year. Not just 2 pages and the inside covers.
This is the one thing I was missing to hold myself accountable and it is key; your goals (and plans) need to be in the same place as your daily planner/agenda. People who achieve their goals say they look at them everyday and having it in the same place you organize the rest of your life is going to ensure that you do just that.
It also needs to have adequate space for you to write in your due dates in the monthly and weekly calendar sections.
I personally also believe your day planner needs to have proper space to plan and organize your entire life so it should have space for appointments, meals, workouts, important dates, budget, projects and anything else that is unique to your life.
Never seen a planner that has all that?
Neither had I.
So I made my own.
(Ok, so I didn't actually make it, my tech skills are not that good, but I had one made)
And it has all those things and more. Also, its affordable. Which is important, lets be honest! I've paid more then 100$ (**gulp**) for a certain well known planner and besides a beautiful design it really didn't have anything more then your run of the mill agenda.
So if you have an agenda that does all that already, awesome, you've got what you need to go out and conquer your dreams.
If not, you can get more information here on the Life Book agenda and goal planner.
Not ready to commit? Try out my free 1 month version first. (Keep in mind the full version has more to it, this is just a taste so you can get the idea)
So now you have everything you need to accomplish your goals.
Isn't that exciting?
No more accepting mediocrity, go dream big and shoot for the stars!
Or start small and build your confidence and momentum, whatever works for you.
Just go do it!
I believe in you:)
